stones throw are an la based record label predominantly focusing on hip hop. as time has gone on the label, founded in 1996, has gone from strength to strength & this growth has seen the release a wide range of music. over the years stones throw has released some of my favourite hip hop albums, mf doom & madlib's madvillainy, dilla's ruff draft & jaylib's champion sound amongst others. but as well as releasing quality hip hop stones throw has always pushed boundaries, releasing dilla's donuts as a 30 minute beat tape gave the world the opportunity to see what the man was capable of. one of the key players on stones throw's roster is madlib, over the years his progression has been from beat maker, to rapper to jazz musician, incorporating a number of aliases along the way. more recently the label has received more notable success in the public eye, aloe blacc's i need a dollar being used as the theme for how to make it in america. not to mention the growing support for the r&b crooner mayer hawthorne who started 2010 as a somewhat unknown & ended up remixing tracks for snoop dogg. lets hope that stones throw continues to grow & produce fresh new music thats not restricted to specific genres.
