the double-breasted silhouette is timeless. whether it be summer-weight-wool and close-cut-avec-denim - it works as a modern translation of an iconic piece to mens tailoring.
colour-blocking jil sander, prada, calvin klein collection, louis vuitton
a confident investment in colour this season is fundamental. electric pastels, bold primary shades and saturated inky tones have ramped up the contrast levels for sportswear and tailoring alike. the one colour styling of previous seasons has evolved into a colour-blocking trend that now walks a line between bad-taste and experimental - according to your point of view.
military - as featured by lanvin, topman design, miharayasuhiro
functional looks are blurring boundaries between genres - and none more so than military styling. uniform pieces with a retro quality. khaki parkas & olive paper-bag-waist trousers to belted shorts and shirts.
floral - as featured by jil sander, topman design, raf simons, yohji yamamoto, d & g
there has been a shift towards floral prints with a dynamic line-up of blooms in store for spring. some showcasing digitally rendered roses, & colossal hypperreal flowers on shirts, while others went for hand drawn naive patterns for an authentic 1960's edge.
paint splatter - as featured by kris van assche, jean paul gaultier, dries van noten
the pattern direction that has the potential to be the most chaotic of this season. kris van assche arguably did it best presenting dusty explosions of powder-paint-like black pigment, limited to a shoulder/hip, on tees, raincoats and chinos. whilst an ink splashed cuff/collar or both, underneath a sharp blazer proves how effective less is more can be, i.e. the stark contrast creates a larger effect.
psychedelic - as featured by jw anderson, paul smith, james long, roberto cavalli, jean paul gaultier, versace
an altered state for menswear - characterized by bursts of colour and swirling prints. looks that seem implausible on paper yet come together in unexpectedly contemporary montages. tie-dye pastel shirting, subtle prints, organic patterns all help inject a sense of individualism. layered up and the look becomes truly your own.
check - as featured by calvin klein collection, kenzo
this season sees a modern uptake on the check - reworkings of traditional themes which serve to highlight a subversive take on tailoring. the use of off-centre and over lapping patterns help to carve up the sharp silhouette of the suit its under.
confidence, good layering technique, and a experimental nature are required for all. get in early & give them a go.
JACques.
